Three questions: methods of determining the direction, place, and time in \u015ar\u012bpati\u2019s Siddh\u0101nta\u015bekhara<\/h2>\n\n\n\n


The theoretical texts called siddh\u0101ntas in Indian astronomical tradition contain a chapter titled Tripra\u015bna meaning the three questions. This chapter mainly deals with the problems pertaining to determination of directions, one\u2019s location, and time (dik-de\u015ba-k\u0101la). Finding the cardinal directions at one\u2019s location is very important practice in Indian tradition as it plays a crucial role in performing sacrifices, rites and rituals, and construction of Vedic altars, temples, individual houses etc. Similarly, knowing the exact sunrise at the observer\u2019s location is key to a variety of social, religious, and cultural activities. \u015ar\u012bpati, an astronomer flourished in the 11th cent. in Maharashtra, discusses these problems and the methods of finding the directions, place, and time at length in the fourth chapter of his Siddh\u0101nta\u015bekhara called Tripra\u015bn\u0101dhy\u0101ya. During this presentation, some of the methods formulated by \u015ar\u012bpati will be discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
