Tycho Brahe as Court Astrologer
Tycho Brahe was a courtier in the service of the Danish crown for a
quarter of a century from 1573 until 1597. During most of this time, he
was administrator of substantial parts of the royal domain. Why did King
Frederik take such a headstrong and independent individual into his
service? Why did the king rewarded him so liberally, what did he expect
to get in return, and what did he actually get for his money? Why did the
Regency government continue to support him during the minority of King
Christian IV, and why did the young king decide not to do so? This
presentation will examine Tycho Brahe's role as a courtier, and what that
role meant to his work as a natural philosopher.
